TOSHIBA & VAPTECH, hydropower project Chaira
August 7, 2014

Started in 1982, Project Chaira is a pumped storage hydropower plant. Project Chaira has a total capacity of 864 megawatts and a pumping capacity of 788 megawatts. The Chaira project consists of four reversible Francis pump-turbines, each producing at 216 megawatts in the generating mode, and 197 megawatts in pumping mode. At that time Chaira held the record for being the largest pumped-storage hydropower plant in southeast Europe. The project has a head of 690 meters generating and 701 meters pumping, which at the time was the record head of a single-stage pump turbine.
